Carol started her new contract on Monday (14th November), I was left to my own devices for the day, which proved to be a real’pea-souper’. Visibility at times was down to about twenty feet, hardly a day for photography. I set out to find the local NCI lookout, said to be atop a cliff to the North of the town of Folkestone. One dear local lady pointed me in the general direction and suggested that I just keep walking until I find it. Well, I did keep walking, even beyond the point that said “Strictly No Entry, Land Slippage!”. The path looked fairly reasonable initially, but then became obviously dodgy. So I retraced my steps, working on the basis that i was being an idiot, and found the small path I had missed in the fog leading to the NCI lookout.

I was made very welcome by the three watchkeepers, Andrew Lovibond, Tom Graham & Martin Shepperd, served excellent coffee & biscuits, and given the full tour of their facilities.

The lookout at Folkestone has not been without its difficulties. The original station disappeared into the sea following a major landslip. Resolutely, they then set up in the nearby Martello Tower, which proved to be too damp & wet to be useable. It certainly didn’t look very hospitable on a foggy day, and this picture was taken after most of the fog had cleared.

The third and current station will be the envy of many others throughout Great Britain. Built on the site of a WW11 gun emplacement, and with the generous help of many local benefactors at a cost of £100,000, the station enjoys first class facilities. There was some resistance to having internet at the station initially, however the provision of a Ship Plotter from COAA has proved to be invaluable in what must be one of the most crowded shipping lanes in the world. On average there are over 600 shipping movements each day, together with over 100 ferry crossings from nearby Dover. The station is fifty metres above sea level, and usually enjoys views of the French coastline. Unfortunately, on the day I arrived we could see only about twenty feet – as far as the sign advising of impending cliff slippages. A precarious position for the new station! In the Summer, with beaches on each side of the station, there is also the potential for tourists getting into difficulties on the water.

The designated chart table is tucked away in the annexe, to the top left of this picture.

The kitchen and gereral purpose are at the rear of the main lookout;-

A few images of Folkestone on a grey day!

A view of the Grand Burstin Hotel, Folkestone where Carol & I stayed. But that’s another story…

As a post script, I returned to Folkestone as Carol’s contract concluded there as a consequence of finding something closer to home. On this occasion the sun made an appearance. This is a shot over Folkestone harbour. The red arrow on the horizon indicates the NCI Station. The Martello tower is to the left of the lookout.

Following the Armistice Parade in Folkestone (previous post) Carol & I decided to do a bit of sightseeing for the afternoon. I have always wanted to visit Canterbury since my schooldays, reading Chaucer. Although it was late in the day, and therefore the tour took on a type of “Europe for a dollar a day” element, the city was magnificent. Canterbury had a large proportion of French visitors – in fact we heard more French spoken than English (or were they just louder?) – which gives the area a very European feel. I don’t think I can say this of any other part of England.

I now know where the Pope gets his hair done…

The Cathedral is one of the most outstanding buildings I have ever seen – and the acoustics are amazing !

It wasn’t until I was processing this image that I noticed the spikes on the shoulder of the statue! Obviously with limited success, since the pigeons still manage to foul in considerable areas.

Carol has begun a new contract working in the Folkstone area, so we were able to attend the Armistice Parade there. Significantly, it was the 11th hour of the 11th day, of the 11th month. It appears that the parade, far from dwindling as had been thought some years ago, is instead growing in strength annually. No doubt the current arenas Britain is militarily engaged in is a factor. I still find this ceremony poignant, even though it may to some degree glorify the real horror of war. Here are a few images anyway

I was told that 8,000,000 men marched down this road during the first World War. Only 6,000,000 returned.

Members of NCI (National Coastwatch Institution) were invited to attend and were able to lay a wreath. They can be seen behind the somewhat portly Firefighter (it must be the uniform!). Noteably, NCI are wearing Naval issue type caps, not regarded as part of our standard uniform, but I must admit it looks very smart on ceremonial occasions. Perhaps it might be suggested at our next committee meeting?

The Gurhka’s had a strong representation here. I’m not sure of the significance of their link with Folkestone – hoping that someone may add a comment on the end and enlighten me.

Again, Folkestone has significant links with France, so much so that French wreaths were laid and La Marseillaise was sung as well as the National Anthem.

I have started to research some of the history of the locality in order to give the pictorial record of Cwm Clydach some structure. The local library has been very helpful, and pointed me toward a little gem of a book. Apparently the hills behind Craig Cefn Parc held some interesting secrets during World War 11, including a landing strip for VIP’s, and a laboratory run by the inventor Harry Grindell Matthews. One of the more interesting inventions was a so called “Death Ray”.

I’ll add more information after I finish reading the book, “The Death Ray. The Secret Life of Harry Grindell Matthews” by Jonathan Foster.

I have been considering for some time tackling a couple of long term photographic projects. Having invested in some heavy duty Stealth Gear ( http://www.stealth-gear.com/products/photography-clothing.html ) I am now fully equipped for all but the most severe of Artic conditions. One project is still under wraps, but this one is the most likely to succeed as it is virtually in my back yard. Cwm Clydach Nature Reserve ( Lat/lng: 51.707120,-3.905252 not to be confused with the Cwm Clydach near Abergavenny ) extends over a reasonable distance to the North West of our house, and the land is varied, which offers myriad photographic opportunities. So yesterday I was just dipping my toes into the water – or mud as it turned out to be. http://www.rspb.org.uk/reserves/guide/c/cwmclydach/index.aspx

We have had several weeks of rain, some quite heavy. We seem to be particularly vulnerable in this area, being on the wrong side of the rain shadow – the heavens seem quite happy to dump their contents regularly on the Black Mountains, and Clydach in particular. Poor Gwen was up to her chin in mud at times, and not being used to long walks (mea culpa) fairly soon decided that she could go no further. Carol had to eventually be called in to pick us up in order to get us home and showered.

Obviously I have some considerable research to do on the area, and need to take a wide range of images, hence the timescale for the project, but here are a few first impressions.

My father also served on the Nabob – as a gunner. The Nabob flew Wildcats and Avengers. The Nabob did serve on the Murmansk run. She was topedoed of of iceland and limped back to Scapa Flow with a skeleton crew all the crew that remained on board were volunteers (even the padre left)My father found out at a reunion some 50 years later that if the Nabob could not make steam in a given period of time she was so be sunk with all hands by her own convoy. After making steam she was being followed by the sub that torpedoed her – aircraft were scrabled and catipolted from her deck – these planes sunk the sub – they could not land back on Nabob and had to ditch in the ocean – airmen where picked up by the Nabob. Crewmen killed in this action are buried at Scapa Flow.

Ben, I’m really grateful for that information, which is not contained in any available documents. I’ll dig out a few more pictures shortly and add then onto my blog under HMS Nabob.
Reading some of the information on the web, I was also interested in the so called ‘mutiny’aboard Nabob en route to Canada. Mine you, with a Captain called “Horatio Nelson” it was not surprising that conditions of service might have been ‘behind the times’.

Ben,

I really hope that there is some sort of message alert on this. I have managed to lose the address of the former Canadian crew that you sent me. Please can you send the message again to celtphotographic@hotmail.co.uk

A special thanks to Ben. I have just received a copy of ‘ “Nabob” The first Canadian Manned Carrier ‘ from Andy Lucas, one of the few remaining survivors of HMS Nabob. The author of the book is Betty Warrilow, published by the Escort Carriers Association. This book is indeed a rare treasure, which will in time be handed down to my son. My thanks and best wishes to Ben, Andy & John Lucas, and of course Tony Madonna in Arizona

Joined Nabob in Brooklyn, New York Jan 1944. Paid her off in Rosyth Dry Dock in August/September 1944. Only three of us paid her off – 4-Ring Captain RN, Ldg. Storesman, and me Ldg. Writer. Was the very last naval man to leave her after completing the decommissioning paper work. Strangely Betty Warrilow’s book only mentions Canadian Personnel, not Royal Navy Personnel, ie. the Fleet Air Arm Pilots and support Ratings, and me. I was the only non-Canadian Crew Member having been taken on to handle the pay and records of the U.K. guys.
A few of the “facts” you have are not absolutely accurate, ie.
only one plane flew off the search for the sub., piloted by the Flight Commander and he landed back on the sloping flight deck, but hit the crash barrier of the end of the flight deck, because the arrester wires were unoperable. By the way, if you go into the “drink” up there, you don’t survive. I am now 86, but have vivid memories of it all.

Thanks for putting this together . Unfortunately I’m writing this one week after my father’s passing. My father Frank Kenyon was on the Nabob as well and in the last few years shared his experiences, esp. around the day it was torpedoed.

I appreciate all this info and will share pics, stories when I have it more organized.
Thanks again for this info. it is great to read especially at this time.

Hi Lindsay. My condolences to you on the passing of your father. There are but a handful of ex-HMS Nabob survivors left. Their memories are precious, and the part they played in earning the freedoms we have today is immeasurable.

If you come across and further information or photographs they would be very much appreciated.

With regards John

James, thank you for your comment. I am always searching for more images, and may have a few more in my possession that I have missed. I will add them soon.

Quoting from my main source of information ( “Nabob” The first Canadian-Manned Aircraft Carrier , by Betty Warrilow. ISBN 0-9693438-0-9 . Published in Canada by Escort Carriers Association. c/o Curator Percy Warrilow, R.R. #Owen sound, Ontario, N4K 5N8 . Printed by Stan Brown Printers Ltd, Owen sound, Ontario ) ;-

Melrose, David, A-5395, AB; Roman Catholic: next of kin: Father, Collingwood, Ontario; ****; D>D>22:08:44. David was born 16th february, 1919, at Leith, Scotland; was a sailor on the Great lakes in Canada prior to joining Nabob.

Don Mc Neille wrote: “I was aquainted with David Melrose. How this came about I cannot remember but we used to talk together whwen we met. I was able to identify David when he was brought up from below in a blanket and placed in a casket…

In 1970 my wife and I had a trip home [to Scotland]…{At the cemettery where the Nabob men are buried} we were able to find all the members of the ship. David was facing the cross…

david’s siter, Mary (Melrose) Ford, Terrace , BC, was a child at the time of his death. Her search for her brother’s friends and shipmates has been very helpful in this history’s research”

James, It is significant that your message comes at this time. Today is the 11:11:11, and in one hour I will be standing in silence, remembering all those who have given their lives in order that we enjoy the freedoms they earned to this day. I can only pray that mankind will find a peaceful way of resolving our differeneces, and that the world becomes a more tolerant place. Please let us learn the lessons of history.

[Please note, all photographs are Copyright to Celt Photographic. Any infringement of copyright WILL be prosecuted - believe me, I need the money!]

Several times a year Bill Bradley from the National Coastwatch Institution, which has a primary role at the Worms Head, organises walks for NCI volunteers, their families & friends. I have been with NCI as a volunteer for probably two and a half years now, but I had still not “walked the Worm”. It is strange, one looks out at Worms Head each time you are on watch and form an impression of the terrain in the varying weather conditions. But nothing quite prepares you for the reality of ‘Walking The Worm’. It is accessible, as long as you are reasonably fit, prepared with the right clothing and footwear, and ensure that the tide is right. Needless to say, being an NCI inspired walk, the tide and weather conditions had been thoroughly checked by Bill before allowing his party to set out. What I had not calculated on was my historically weak ankles (several breaks as a teenager!),being sixty two and still believing that I am sixteen, a smoker & unfit, the terrain being more challenging than it looks from the mainland, plus Bill Bradley (despite being ten years older than me) being as fit as a juvenile Chamois!

Having said that, it was immensely rewarding and revealing. The beautiful thing about the Worms Head is its changeable nature. Undoubtedly one of the worlds great beauty spots, with its relationship with the sea constantly changing. A breeding place and shelter for a wide variety of wild life, flora & fauna. Dylan Thomas regularly explored its secrets. From his short story “Who do you wish was with us” he wrote;- “… Laughing on the cliff above the very long golden beach, we pointed out to each other, as though the other were blind, the great rock of the Worm’s Head. The sea was out. We crossed over on slipping stones and stood, at last, triumphantly on the windy top. There was monstrous, thick grass there that made us spring-heeled and we laughed and bounced on it, scaring the sheep who ran up and down the battered sides like goats. Even on this calmest day a wind blew on the Worm.”

Before him sailors for generations have used the strange rocky configerations as a landmark. In fact the name probably came from Viking invaders who saw the “Wurm” (also known as Guivre, Worm, and Wyrm) as a sea serpent. The area is reknown for over two hundred and fifty shipwrecks (http://www.gowershipwrecks.co.uk/), ( http://www.nciwormshead.org.uk/worms-head-locality/shipwrecks-introduction/470-whitford-wrecks-22-23-january-1868 ), the Helvetia being the most visible remnant, the prow still standing strikingly on Rhossili Beach.

Generations of local farmers have worked its resources, primarily for sheep grazing. It is reported that one even grew potatoes on the south side of the inner head, which produced an earlier crop than was expected. However the problems of transporting them from the Worm proved prohibitive.

The so called ’causeway’, which dangerously floods rapidly twice a day with the tide, looks benevolent from above. Once approached on foot still has treacherously slippery, sea smoothed rocks, together with deep beds of muscles. I was once asked by a dear lady in an electric wheelchair whether it [the Causeway] was accessible to cross. In simple terms, no. It is very unlikely that anyone with any substantial degree of disability would even get to the causeway. (Having set the challenge, I’m sure someone will prove me wrong. If so, I will buy you a drink!).

Regrouping as we set out on the causeway;-

Warnings of the dangers involved with the rapid currents are strategically placed along the walk from the Worms Head Hotel and the National Trust shop, but have been all too frequently ignored or not understood by visitors to the area. Lives have been lost here.

The path to the southern edge of the “Outer Head” is the safest, and having crossed the causeway, is a welcome relief.

The ‘beach’ area between the Inner & Outer Head comes as a surprise. This is the preferred and safest route if the tide is outgoing, as you will see from following images.

Looking back at the Northern pathway, it is evident why this path can be dangerous, especially if it is wet underfoot. It may be the best vantage point to watch the Grey Seals that come to bask between tides, however it is not the recommended route.

The Devil’s Bridge, viewed from the south side. It look precarious from this angle but in reality this is a reasonable crossing point.

A further view of the Devil’s Bridge taking in the Lower Neck to the right of the picture. Crossing the Lower neck involves a fair degree of scrabbling over some difficult terrain.

Approaching the Devil’s Bridge. The tree trunk, washed up on the right of the picture, serves as an aid to crossing

At one point here I launched myself between two rocks, but ended up straddling them, with quite a drop below me! My thanks to the gentleman who came to my rescue! I did feel foolish!

As this picture demonstrates, crossing at some points can be quite difficult. Injuries often occur on The Worm. The Coastwatch Station are able to offer help & assistance. This will involve informing the Coastguard, and assisting in coordinating any response. If the injury is in any way serious dial 999 for the Coastguard. For further advice the Coastwatch team can be contacted on 01792 390167

A further two views looking back from ‘The Low Neck’ toward the causeway.

A view from the Low Neck of the Coastwatch Station

A welcome relief after traversing the Lower Neck. The pathway on the Outer Head becomes more reasonable once again.

Looking back eastward toward the Inner Head.

A view toward the Outer Head from Devil’s Bridge

Looking back toward the Inner Worm from Devil’s Bridge. It is worth noting the the tide, at certain times of the year, can cover this area very quickly.

A view toward Rhossili beach from the Outer Head

Crossing Devil’s Bridge heading to the Outer Head

One of the main things to note is the sign on the Outer Head where members of the public are asked not to proceed any further between March 1st & August 15th because of birds breeding on the Head. Sadly, a large number of people completely ignore this request. I can understand why this must be frustrating, having walked so far and not being allowed to reach the end. I really feel that the National Trust (who own the land) should have advised people of this restriction well in advance of this point.

The final leg of the journey to the Outer Head

For many, climbing the summit of the Outer Head is the target. There is a right and a wrong way of doing this, and even while we were there other members of the public were taking unnecessary risks climbing an overhang of rock. Needless to say, Bill was quick to advise them of the error of their way!

A view of the southern side of the Worm taken from the base of the Outer Head

The return journey across the southern’beach’.

Our return journey across the top of the Inner Head

…and the descent back toward the Causeway

My special thanks to Bill Bradley for making this such a good and safe day.

I picked up a small book belonging to Chris this morning – had not come across Mark Thomas before or “The People’s Manifesto, or even more amazingly, none of his Radio 4 material. The book is hilarious, and short. Chris has kindly sent me his auto-bio, and the man has got my serious respect already. looking forward to delving into more of his work.

Mark Thomas Biography – in his own words

Summary – Mark has been a performer since 1985, he has toured the UK and abroad, has made seven series of his own show for Channel 4, worked as a comic, an activist and a writer. He still just about has a regular column in the New Statesman magazine.

Mark was born in South London on the 11th April 1963. His mum was a midwife, his dad a self employed builder (and ex lay preacher).

Mark went to local primary school and then won a scholarship to Christ’s Hospital public school. Where he got some O-levels and A-levels.

He went to Bretton Hall in Yorkshire, in September 1981 and got a degree in Theatre Arts. Did shows in miner’s soup kitchens and fund raisers during the strike. Mark still does an annual benefit show for the National Union of Mineworkers in Wakefield.
________________________________________
1985 November First proper stand up gig at the White Lion in Putney on 19th November. Shit. (Not sure if that refers to the gig or Putney – Ed.)

December First paid gig .
________________________________________
1986-89 Mark stops working with his dad and does stand up full time.

To be honest this period is a bit hazy but 1st Radio gig was Cabaret upstairs for Radio 4 and first TV gig was Friday Night Live (going on about shopping trolley rage and Opera singers, we think – Ed.).

Other TV bits included Paramount City, London Underground.

Becomes a regular compere at the Comedy Store in Leicester Square. Does the things comics do, gigs, students gigs, Edinburgh festival gigs.
________________________________________
1989 Mark is a weekly regular on the first series of the Mary Whitehouse Experience for Radio One.

Performs hippy gigs in Northern California
________________________________________

Wins Time Out award for his “distinctive contribution to the art of comedy.”

Presents the weekly two hour magazine programme on Radio 5- The Mix. Mark makes it through live sessions with Julian Cope, interviews with Kurt Vonnegut and the BBC’s decision not to mention the war. Leaves after nine months.
________________________________________
1991- Presents Radio 5 documentary “Sleeping with the NME.”

Hosts Radio One topical show Loose Talk, with Kevin Day for series one and two.
________________________________________
1996-First Series of the Mark Thomas Comedy Product(six programmes). Bets half the last shows budget on a horse and loses ends up making the last show in a friends living room.

Released video- Sex, Filth and Religion. The video is about sex, filth and religion.

Records Album – Live at the Birmingham Rep.
________________________________________
________________________________________
The series proves that radioactive seagull shit is at large in Sellafield (the clean up costs come to around £1m). Organises a mass paging of Labour MP’s during the party conference instructing M.P’s to call encore at the end of Jack Straw’s law and order speech. They do. Gets viewers asking to see Sir Nicolas Soames (ex Tory Armed Forces minister) furniture that they are entitled to under the conditionally exempt works of art tax scheme. So many people apply he ends up paying the tax on his furniture.

Dispatches- The Lie of the Land. Investigates the con of the wealthy avoiding inheritance tax by making their art, furniture, homes and land available for public viewing- except they hide the information so no one knows about it. Gordon Brown changes the law in the following budget. The Rothschilds end up paying about a million in tax rather than let the hoi polloi in.
